Pepino, Melon pear or sweet cucumber (lat. Solanum muricatum) – evergreen shrub of the nightshade family, originating from South America, grown for its edible sweet fruit color and flavor tastes like a mixture of melon, cucumber, pumpkin or even pear aroma. The most widely cultivated in Peru, Chile and New Zealand. Pepino fairly new vegetable crop for Ukraine. As a perennial plant grown in greenhouses.
Pepino – is a perennial plant, which is a branched semilignified shrub, up to five feet with delicious and fragrant fruits. Pepino grown in central heated greenhouses or as a house plant – on the windowsill in the conservatory.
Pepino fruit is very diverse and different from each other in size, shape, color and quality. Many of them have exotic color – bright yellow background with purple jagged strokes. The pulp of the ripe fruit yellow or colorless. Taste sweet and sour and very juicy, since 92% of the water. Acidity of this fruit gives vitamin C, which it contains. Pepino is rich in keratin, iron and pectin, plenty of vitamins A, B1, B2 and PP. Flowers new vegetable culture most similar to potato. Stem and leaves, like pepper.
Pepino fruit – berry, fruit shape elongated conical or ploskookrugloy, 15-17 cm long, 10-12 cm wide, the average weight of 600 grams. In 1890 in St. Petersburg for the next agricultural exhibition melon pear praised Alexander III, and his orders pepino seeds were sent to all the palace greenhouse. Until October 1917 the plant itself felt good on Russian soil, but then forgot about it for many years, until 1980.
